Sanding-TechniquesFighting to get a really good finish? I finally figured out how to make my products look better.

I use a lot of river recovered hardwoods I get from a local dealer here. My wood of choice is Mahogany. I also use some locally sourced cherry and walnut.

I was noticing I was getting the fuzzies when applying oil or finish to my projects and realize despite my best efforts my sanding was just not good enough.

So here is what I do.

  • Sand thru 80 and 120.
  • Wet the wood
  • Wipe off the excess
  • Heat with heat gun (you don’t have to do this – you can simply let it dry) Do not sand it wet. The heat gun speeds the whole process up immensely.
  • Hit it again with 120 or 180 grit
  • I will sometimes repeat the wetting. If it still raises the grain I sometimes will do that a couple of times. Normally 1 time will do it.
  • Blow it off with air or wipe down with a tack cloth.
